Unresolved emotional patterns
In Craniosacral Therapy, we speak of an energy cyst when residual energy from a past physical or emotional experience becomes lodged in the body. Such energy may originate from trauma, stress, conflict, or unprocessed emotions. While the body may encapsulate this energy as a short-term protective mechanism, over time it can restrict the natural flow of vital energy, potentially resulting in physical or emotional discomfort. By resolving these energetic blockages, the body can regain balance and resilience.
«Craniosacral Therapy supports the body’s natural healing mechanisms and gently helps it to restore its own balance.»

Dr. John Upledger
Pioneer of the craniosacral rhythm
Dr. John E. Upledger (1932–2012) was the discoverer of the craniosacral rhythm. Dr. Upledger was an American osteopath and neuroscientist, recognised as the founder of modern CranioSacral Therapy. During his work as an assistant surgeon in the 1970s, he discovered the craniosacral rhythm, a subtle movement of the cerebrospinal fluid system.
He subsequently developed a gentle, manual therapy based on this rhythm, aimed at harnessing the body's self-healing abilities. Dr. Upledger founded the Upledger Institute International in Florida to research and teach his method. His work has had a global impact on holistic medicine and manual therapy.

The craniosacral rhythm is a subtle, wave-like movement created by the production and flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the central nervous system. This rhythm is considered an important indicator of health and balance within the body in CranioSacral Therapy.
Characteristics of the craniosacral rhythm:
Origin: The rhythm is generated by the cyclic production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull (cranium) and spine (sacrum).
Movement: It manifests as a gentle expansion and contraction of the tissues and bony structures, primarily in the area of the skull, spine, and sacrum.
Frequency: In a healthy person, the frequency of the craniosacral rhythm is about 6–12 cycles per minute.
Holistic: The rhythm permeates the entire body, influencing the nervous, muscular, skeletal, and fascial systems.
Significance in CranioSacral Therapy:
Therapists sense the craniosacral rhythm with their hands to detect blockages, tensions, or imbalances in the body. Through gentle touch and specific techniques, the goal is to harmonise the flow of this movement and activate the body’s self-healing capabilities. The craniosacral rhythm is often seen as a reflection of the body’s inner balance and plays a central role in this holistic treatment method.

In Craniosacral Therapy, an energy cyst refers to the accumulation of energy in your body from a past physical or emotional event. This can be triggered by a conflict, stress, or unprocessed emotions. Such events leave traces not only in the memory but also in the body’s tissues. The energy becomes "encapsulated" in these areas to protect your system and allow you to continue functioning. While this protective mechanism may initially be helpful, the trapped energy can lead to discomfort in the long term, as it blocks the natural flow of your life energy.

Somato-Emotional Release© goes beyond the physical level and explores the emotional component of trauma. The therapist assists the client in identifying and releasing unconscious memories or feelings that are stored in the tissues.
